'Texas Monthly Presents'
'Texas Monthly Presents' is a series produced by the award-winning magazine and broadcast on Texas PBS that brings the publication's journalism from the page to the screen.

Texas Monthly has been home to many of the state's great writers who are known for capturing unforgettable senses of place, larger-than-life characters, and unique experiences. In the inaugural season - titled The Story - viewers will be immersed in the world of Texas Monthly stories as writers for the magazine peel back the veil and reveal the fascinating ways their articles came to be - which are often stories in and of themselves. The first season will launch in two parts, with the first starting on May 4, with four episodes, and the second beginning in the fall.

In each of the show's weekly 30-minute episodes, viewers will be introduced to multiple distinct segments that share a common theme despite cutting across different topics, places, and characters. On-location filming grounds viewers in communities all over the state while in-studio interviews with the writers add powerful context, revealing the unique ways in which journalists explore the Lone Star State.

In the premiere episode, Texas Monthly writers explore how physical spaces offer insight into our past and future. Outside San Antonio, writer Lea Konczal takes viewers into America's last surviving enclave of ninepin bowling, a German sport that early immigrants brought to the U.S. and made popular in south-central Texas in the late 19th century. Then, James Beard Award-winning taco editor José R. Ralat introduces viewers to Rosas Kitchen, a beloved San Antonio taco truck that's run by a family from Mexico whose faith, love, and perseverance have helped turn the business into a success that's celebrated by the community. The episode closes with distinguished writer Mike Hall highlighting one woman's mission to save what's left of Burleson County's Dabney Hill freedom colony - a community established in the 1880s by formerly enslaved people - for future generations.

The season also includes stories about the world of equestrian drill, a beloved artesian spring and swimming hole that is going dry, what it's really like along the Texas-Mexico border, and more.

"Texas Monthly Presents features the writers and subjects of our magazine stories in a whole new way," says Texas Monthly Editor-in-Chief Ross McCammon. "This program provides a way for our remarkably talented writers to express why they chose to focus on a subject and the surprising, moving, and sometimes harrowing turns a reporting trip can take. I couldn't be prouder of this show."

You can check your local PBS station for the show's schedule or download PBS's free app to watch episodes whenever you like.

"Texas PBS is dedicated to uplifting Texas stories and showcasing the unique beauty of our state. The new partnership between Texas PBS and Texas Monthly will propel this mission forward," says Texas PBS Executive Director Kierstan Schwab. "It will bring statewide audiences from both media outlets a new look at the fascinating communities and landscapes only found in Texas."

Special thanks to our underwriters, H-E-B and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, for helping to make this show possible.
