On her blog, Johansen explains that she is a long-time fan of the mystery genre, but she found herself unable to fully enjoy many books in the genre due to the more adult themes they tend to explore. She was then introduced to the “cozy mystery” genre, which borrows the tropes popular in other franchises and adapts them into a more family-friendly form.
“Lilli’s Song” is one such mystery, a story which centers around the eponymous Lilli and her sudden, mysterious disappearance. Her community is thrown into chaos as they search for the 14-year-old, fearing the worst. However, it quickly becomes clear that larger forces are at play in this mystery than those of a typical, mundane crime drama.
The unique twist at play in this new novel, Johansen teases, is the fact that Lilli and her family live in the town of Skyport, Texas, a well-known hotspot for UFO sightings which poses the question has Lilli been abducted by visitors from another world - and Johansen encourages readers to pick up a copy and find out for themselves.
In addition to its sci-fi and mystery elements, the novel contains a strong message of faith and family inspired by Johansen’s own experiences in the Church. In this case, Johansen explores her faith through the character of Treena Wood, whose devotion to the Church inspires her to investigate Lilli’s disappearance in a way that no one else is equipped to do.
Betty Johansen herself spent many years as a junior high and high school science teacher, a fact which is also reflected in the themes and characters of the book. Now retired from teaching, she has explained that her passion for writing continues to grow with each novel she releases, as does her faith.
